Culture and traditions

Architecture and art, museums and nature make Trentino a wonderful travel destination for culture lovers. Here are some locations and attractions that you cannot miss:

The historic center of Trento enjoys a long and rich tradition that links it to some of the most important moments in the history of Italy. Without a doubt, the political, religious and monumental center of the city is the Duomo’s Square, which overlooks splendid frescoed noble palaces such as the “Case Cazuffi-Rella”. In this square, stands the homonymous Cathedral of San Vigilio.

MUSE is the Trento’s science museum. It is located immediately south of the historic Palazzo delle Albere, in a building inside the residential district Le Albere, both designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano.

The MART – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto is a great institution dedicated to modern and contemporary art. It is used to integrate and manage the vast artistic heritage and activities in the field of art in the Province of Trento. The collections are vast and range from 800 to today. They include paintings, sculptures, graphics, objects, photographs and very important cores of documentary material.

Castel Thun is located on top of a hill at 609 m. near the town of Vigo di Ton in a beautiful panoramic position. It is one of the most interesting examples of Trentino’s castle architecture, the civil-military structure is typically Gothic and is surrounded by a complex system of fortifications formed by towers, lunar bastions, moat and roundabout. In Val di Non you find many others castles: Castel Valer, Castel Cles, Castel Malgolo, Castel San Pietro.

Castel Stenico is a symbol of the power of the bishop princes of Trento in this region. Outside it looks like a severe and imposing medieval fortress, while inside sculptural decorations and fine frescoes give it the appearance of an elegant residence.

The Sanctuary of San Romedio is one of the most characteristic hermitages in Europe. Here San Romedio lived as a hermit for many years, according to the legend in the company of only a bear. The Sanctuary of San Romedio consists of five small overlapping churches, all built on a rock spur and joined together by a long flight of 131 steps. The path that leads to the Sanctuary of San Romedio is one of the most significant walks of worship in Trentino.

Alto Adige: thanks to its two entities, Bolzano is able to amaze tourists coming from everywhere. The two faces, one Northern-European and the other more Mediterranean, are a perfect match for the historical-artistic beauties of the city. For centuries Bolzano has been the privileged center for trade between Italy and Germany. Today the South Tyrolean capital is a cosmopolitan city that knows how to be lively, cheerful, modern and refined at the same time.
